Inspiring Health Science Studies (IHSS) – SERVE | LEARN | ENGAGE

IHSS is collaborating with Reach for a Dream Foundation – Dream Rooms Project.

IHSS is a team of high school students, led by Mayaskar Nair (Grade 12). The aim is to serve the needs of patient community groups in public hospitals, whilst having the opportunity to learn from and engage with health services personnel. In this way IHSS members are able to make more informed decisions about further studies in Health Sciences whilst serving the community that they are working with.

Reach for a Dream – Dream Rooms project is aimed at providing unwell children with stimulation that they would not necessarily get by lying in a hospital bed (having no place to go).

This escape, although in the hospital, will allow children to leave the hospital ward and engage in activities such as; Imaginary play (Lego, doll house, imaginary cooking and building), educational games (board games and tablets will provide children with the opportunity to still learn), electronic distractions (game consoles) and creative crafts (beading, painting, drawing, stamping and knitting).

IHSS will be doing the following:

Fundraising to source and purchase the following for the play area:
• Book shelves
• Readers/ Story Books – suitable for children between the age of 5 and 13
• Colouring books
• Crayons
• Water Paints
• Paper / Board
• Paint Brushes
• Craft Kits

Delivering the supplies to the paediatric ward

Smile Senior Citizens (SSC)

Spread hope and courage and to put a Smile on the faces of Senior Citizens. Celebrate the lives of people from the Senior Citizens Club that lost their lives in the recent Covid 19 period.

On 15 February 2022 meals and other activities were provided to 36 Senior Citizens the most valuable members of our community in Bonteheuwel, Cape Town, Western Cape.

The Senior Citizens were positively overwhelmed and each one were also given a long stem red rose.  They were Smiling with tears of joy rolling down their tender cheeks.  Ruweida, Art of Living Teacher and volunteer rendition of three songs touched the hearts of the Senior Citizens. The Senior Citizens also danced to what is called the famous line dance. The theme song for the afternoon was Smile.

In addition to Ruweidaji entertaining, we had also arranged for a local singer and guitarist to treat the Senior Citizens. Our guest speaker charged the audience with emotions of love, faith, and hope.

The Chairperson of the Senior Citizens Club in Bonteheuwel provided the vote of thanks on behalf of the Senior Citizens. Her speech was full of gratitude for IAHV. She described the event as spectacular. The Senior Citizens were Smiling and Happy.  The participants were full of grace and gratitude.

Sharing experiences from some of the Senior Citizens:

  • “I have never experienced something like this in my life before.”
  • “It was a beautiful program.”
  • “This is truly God’s grace”
  • “How come you’ll care for people so much? I am so happy that you’ll came to Bonteheuwel. We have never seen such generosity. Thank you on behalf of all of us” Chairperson Senior Citizens Club.

Based on discussions with Senior Citizens we decided on further activities in Bonteheuwel and other areas in Western Cape.  To inspire others to join in South Africa and Africa to join the Smile Senior Citizens (SSC) project and roll it out in their areas.
