Smile Senior Citizens Celebrate 45 Years of the Art of Living

On 1 October 2026, more than 400 senior citizens from 22 organisations came together for a joyful celebration honouring 45 years of The Art of Living (AoL).

The event was also held in recognition of 50 years of Mitchells Plain as a residential area, bringing together senior citizens for a day filled with connection, entertainment and community spirit.

Smile Senior Citizens (SSC), a project registered with the International Association for Human Values (IAHV), contributed to the celebration by providing a sumptuous meal, sound system and entertainment for the day.

A heartfelt thank you goes to BAPS Charities Cape Town and Mr Neelesh Bhagattjee for working alongside IAHV to make this meaningful event possible.

Smile Senior Citizens is dedicated to enriching the lives of senior citizens through three key objectives: providing meals, entertainment and blessings. Through these initiatives, the project creates opportunities for older members of the community to feel valued, connected and celebrated.

This was the second event organised as part of the 45th anniversary celebrations of The Art of Living, reflecting the continued commitment of IAHV and its volunteers to serving communities with compassion and care.

Through shared meals, joyful moments and meaningful connections, we celebrate the wisdom and contributions of our senior citizens.

Winter & Back to School Packs Project Brings Warmth and Hope to Children

Through the Winter & Back to School Packs Project, IAHV supported Jeppe Phakamisa Ubuntu (JPU) with a generous donation to bring warmth, nourishment and hope to children and families in the Jeppestown and Belgravia communities.

The donation included:

  • 120 hoodies, scarves and pairs of gloves
  • 600 soup sachets
  • 300 meal sachets
  • 100 canned soups

JPU is a community-based outreach programme that has been serving children in the Jeppestown and Belgravia communities for many years. Through sport, educational activities, cycling, mentoring and fellowship, the organisation strives to nurture character, build confidence and develop future leaders within the community.

The donation made a meaningful difference, particularly during the cold winter months when many families face significant financial pressure. For some children, receiving a new hoodie was an especially memorable experience, with the excitement and joy on their faces reflecting just how much these simple acts of kindness meant to them.

Beyond providing warm clothing and essential food supplies, the project sent an important message to every child: they are valued, cared for and not forgotten.

IAHV extends its heartfelt thanks to Ms Manisha Narayan, the project lead, for her dedication in making the Winter & Back to School Packs Project possible.

Through initiatives like these, IAHV continues to support vulnerable communities, demonstrating how compassion and collective action can make a tangible difference in people’s lives.

Together, we can bring warmth, nourishment and hope to those who need it most.
