Breath Water Sound at Mzwamandla Khanyile Primary School

Breath Water Sound program held at Mzwamandla Khanyile Primary School, Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal with 32 of the school’s, Girl guides team.

The girls were very enthusiastic about the yoga, and took to it, effortlessly. They were also surprised, at how casually they thought of their breath and by the end of the week, they had learnt how powerful the breath is.

Adjusting their diet, to consider drinking more water, and less sweetened drinks, will be a new concept, to them.

As the program came to an end, meditation, was serene and beautiful, with a feeling of quiet and gentleness, prevailing.

Comfort with Dignity for Girls – KZN

The International Association for Human Values (IAHV) along with its sister organisation, the Art of Living Foundation and in partnership with Subz Pads and Pants brought comfort and dignity to female learners at Mountain Rise Primary School in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday, 16 October with the distribution of reusable pads and panties to 88 girls from Grade 6 and 7.

The girls were taught how to use the sanitary pads and received valuable guidelines and pamphlets. The educational programme also included talks on the menstrual cycle, puberty, how to say ‘NO’ to sexual abuse and empowering the girls on how to make right choices. A practical demonstration by the Art of Living teachers taught the girls breathing and light meditation techniques to help the girls focus and be stress free, together with some yoga postures to reduce menstrual pain and cramps.

The recipients were overwhelmed with the talks and gift packs which will certainly make a huge difference in their lives by:

  1. Giving the girls the dignity and comfort they deserve, during their menstruation.
  2. Preventing the girls from missing school when they menstruate.
  3. Preventing girls from being bullied and insulted.
  4. Providing guidance and holistic educational talks on health matters.
  5. Empowering girls to take charge of their own health.
  6. Building confidence and coping skills of the girls.

For further information, participation and donations regarding the next activation of the project, please contact:
National Office: Shushila Patel on 011 886 0762 or Project Manager: Dr. Suren Lutchminarayan on 031 562 0852.

Menstrual hygiene and health programme for adolescent girls

We had our first Menstrual hygiene and health programme for adolescent girls in South Africa at Sisanda Mzulu Primary school with grade 7 learners.
It runs over 3 days, approximately 2hours per day with girls who are pre-menstrual and those who already have their periods, so that the following is achieved:
  • Better understanding of their body and the changes that take place as they grow up.
  • Knowledge about menstruation and menstrual hygiene practices that would enable them to become more confident about the ‘woman’ they are and prepare them to handle the pressures from the changes in their bodies and surroundings.
  • Understand the importance of food and nutrition in growth and development.
  • Learn simple techniques (pranayama, mudra and asanas) on how to feel more at ease during  menstrual period.
Many of they girls had no one to ask about these things. The teachers were too busy in classes with large numbers. They really welcomed the project.

Breath Water Sound at Mary Kihn School for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing

We are for the first time in Cape Town teaching 45 deaf children at Mary Kihn School, a Special Needs School.

We have done some research after having meetings with the school and the WCED and shall modify some aspects as the deaf don’t close their eyes as their eyes become their ears and eyes.

We focussed on the yoga, breathing and sound aspect in terms of bringing African drums and using this vibration to calm them, and an added fun element for the children. The Principal has communicated and said that deaf children need more practical lessons such as yoga and sound vibration and of course the breathing. They are foundation phase as well as older children.

We had incredible feedback from the teachers with regards to the energy levels and concentration of the children. The Western Cape Education Department is monitoring the program and are very happy with the children’s response even after just 2 days.

Well done to to our team volunteers, Francois, Elizabeth and Nomvuyo.

Mimi Fourie Hof (Vaal Region) – Library

The official opening of the Mimi Fourie Hof – IAHV community library took place on the 12th October 2018 at the Mimi Fourie Hof Building, 27 Market Avenue, Vereeniging.

The vision of Ms. Anita Hanekom must be acknowledged for the latest initiative and as contributors to the establishment and funding of the library and Ms. Anita Hanekom and Estelle were special guests invited.

The relationship between DCS Groenpunt and the IAHV continues to build in a very positive way from the:

  • Prison Programs run over a number of years,
  • Tree planting at DCS and the local communities,
  • The knitting of blankets for Mandela Day and the distribution of these to disadvantaged members of the Vaal community.

This library will benefit not only the oldies at our Mimi Fourie Hof project but also others in the immediate community, to assist those less fortunate as well as the children from the Leeuhof community who will be able to use the library to assist in their school studies and also gain from the life wisdom of the oldies from Mimi Fourie Hof who will run the library!

The library is rapidly taking shape thanks to the generous donations of books from a number of people, in particular Anita, and a very special thanks goes out to Estelle… the books will really help fill the shelves.
