The International Association for Human Values (IAHV) along with its sister organisation, the Art of Living Foundation and in partnership with Subz Pads and Pants brought comfort and dignity to female learners at Mountain Rise Primary School in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday, 16 October with the distribution of reusable pads and panties to 88 girls from Grade 6 and 7.

The girls were taught how to use the sanitary pads and received valuable guidelines and pamphlets. The educational programme also included talks on the menstrual cycle, puberty, how to say ‘NO’ to sexual abuse and empowering the girls on how to make right choices. A practical demonstration by the Art of Living teachers taught the girls breathing and light meditation techniques to help the girls focus and be stress free, together with some yoga postures to reduce menstrual pain and cramps.

The recipients were overwhelmed with the talks and gift packs which will certainly make a huge difference in their lives by:

  1. Giving the girls the dignity and comfort they deserve, during their menstruation.
  2. Preventing the girls from missing school when they menstruate.
  3. Preventing girls from being bullied and insulted.
  4. Providing guidance and holistic educational talks on health matters.
  5. Empowering girls to take charge of their own health.
  6. Building confidence and coping skills of the girls.
