Breath Water Sound at Mzwamandla Khanyile Primary School

Breath Water Sound program held at Mzwamandla Khanyile Primary School, Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal with 32 of the school’s, Girl guides team.

The girls were very enthusiastic about the yoga, and took to it, effortlessly. They were also surprised, at how casually they thought of their breath and by the end of the week, they had learnt how powerful the breath is.

Adjusting their diet, to consider drinking more water, and less sweetened drinks, will be a new concept, to them.

As the program came to an end, meditation, was serene and beautiful, with a feeling of quiet and gentleness, prevailing.

Comfort with Dignity for Girls – KZN

The International Association for Human Values (IAHV) along with its sister organisation, the Art of Living Foundation and in partnership with Subz Pads and Pants brought comfort and dignity to female learners at Mountain Rise Primary School in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday, 16 October with the distribution of reusable pads and panties to 88 girls from Grade 6 and 7.

The girls were taught how to use the sanitary pads and received valuable guidelines and pamphlets. The educational programme also included talks on the menstrual cycle, puberty, how to say ‘NO’ to sexual abuse and empowering the girls on how to make right choices. A practical demonstration by the Art of Living teachers taught the girls breathing and light meditation techniques to help the girls focus and be stress free, together with some yoga postures to reduce menstrual pain and cramps.

The recipients were overwhelmed with the talks and gift packs which will certainly make a huge difference in their lives by:

  1. Giving the girls the dignity and comfort they deserve, during their menstruation.
  2. Preventing the girls from missing school when they menstruate.
  3. Preventing girls from being bullied and insulted.
  4. Providing guidance and holistic educational talks on health matters.
  5. Empowering girls to take charge of their own health.
  6. Building confidence and coping skills of the girls.

For further information, participation and donations regarding the next activation of the project, please contact:
National Office: Shushila Patel on 011 886 0762 or Project Manager: Dr. Suren Lutchminarayan on 031 562 0852.

Menstrual hygiene and health programme for adolescent girls

We had our first Menstrual hygiene and health programme for adolescent girls in South Africa at Sisanda Mzulu Primary school with grade 7 learners.
It runs over 3 days, approximately 2hours per day with girls who are pre-menstrual and those who already have their periods, so that the following is achieved:
  • Better understanding of their body and the changes that take place as they grow up.
  • Knowledge about menstruation and menstrual hygiene practices that would enable them to become more confident about the ‘woman’ they are and prepare them to handle the pressures from the changes in their bodies and surroundings.
  • Understand the importance of food and nutrition in growth and development.
  • Learn simple techniques (pranayama, mudra and asanas) on how to feel more at ease during  menstrual period.
Many of they girls had no one to ask about these things. The teachers were too busy in classes with large numbers. They really welcomed the project.

Say YES to programme for schools to help pupils manage their emotions

Earlier this year, Cape Town was identified as the 13th most violent city in the world in the latest Mexican Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice report. Amid the mountainous and oceanic scenery, communities in the mother city, such as Bonteheuwel and Khayelitsha, are plagued by violence, gangsterism and drug abuse. This year, a programme was started to assist youth in these poor and troubled communities to develop life skills such as remaining calm in conflict situations; to enhance human values such as respect; and to assist the young people to improve their focus and concentration in the classroom.
